The Selfish Giant

I can remember crying in the Toy department of the Army and Navy store when I first read Oscar Wilde's short story. I had to go and hide somewhere.

I have just rediscovered an audio version narrated by Stephen Fry, along with all the other stories, like The Happy Prince. The thread where is was posted had folks stating they had caught themselves crying in the street as they listened to it.

I printed out a copy and sat with Oi as she listened and read it simultaneously.

Once again, I had to leave the room as the tears welled in my eyes.

I don't know how Stephen managed to get through it without bubbling. And, of course, his soft, nurturing voice fits it perfectly.
